What are GLP-1 medications and how do they differ?

These terms all refer to the same family of weight loss medications, just at different levels of specificity.

GLP-1 is the drug class — a group of medications that work by mimicking a hormone that regulates appetite. All the drugs below are GLP-1s (or variants of them).

Semaglutide is an active ingredient. It comes in two branded forms: Ozempic (originally approved for type 2 diabetes) and Wegovy (approved specifically for weight loss, at a higher dose). When people say they want "Ozempic for weight loss," what they actually need is Wegovy — it's the same molecule, prescribed for the right purpose.

Tirzepatide is a newer active ingredient that targets two hormones instead of one (GLP-1 and GIP), which is why trial results show slightly higher average weight loss. The branded version available in the UK is Mounjaro.

Retatrutide is the next generation — targeting three hormones — and showed up to 24% body weight loss in early trials. It isn't approved in the UK yet.
