Wegovy FAQs
Is switching to Wegovy a good option?
Yes, switching to Wegovy is a great option, especially if keeping your treatment cost low is important to you.
Is Wegovy as effective as Mounjaro?
Based on evidence from clinical trial and our real-world data, Mounjaro results in slightly more weight loss, on average, though individual results will vary. However, with our real-world data showing patients typically achieve 18% weight loss in just over a year with Wegovy, this is likely to meet most patients’ weight loss needs for a more affordable cost.
Are there different side effects between Mounjaro and Wegovy?
The kinds of side effects that can be experienced with Mounjaro and Wegovy are almost identical, and the more common side effects such as nausea, constipation, diarrhoea or vomiting can occur with either treatment. With both medicines, the risk of side effects increases with higher doses and that’s why we take a personalised and cautious approach to optimise your dose to limit the impact of any side effects.
Everyone’s response to medication is different. It’s possible that you may have a different side effect experience when you switch medications, especially at the start. It’s also possible to have some side effects with your current treatment that disappear when you switch. Remember, the Juniper Team are here to support you through the switching phase to optimise your treatment, just reach out if you need help.
Is it safe to switch medications mid-treatment?
It’s safe to switch treatments during your treatment, provided this is appropriately supervised by an expert clinician like we have at Juniper. Switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy is considered very safe, and generally, anyone who can be treated with Mounjaro can be safely treated with Wegovy. Wegovy has the added advantage of not affecting the contraceptive pill or certain other medicines, which can make it a safer treatment option for some.
It’s important that the correct starting dose is prescribed when switching, along with appropriate advice and ongoing support to manage any issues that could arise.
Do I need to pause treatment to switch?
No, you don’t have to pause when switching at Juniper - we make this seamless. When switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy, we will advise you to wait the usual 7 days between doses before commencing with your first Wegovy dose.
What support does Juniper provide if I switch?
Switching must be appropriately supervised by an expert clinician like we have at Juniper. It’s important that the correct starting dose is prescribed when switching, along with appropriate advice and ongoing support to manage any issues that could arise, including making dose adjustments.
Will a clinician guide me through the process?
Yes, your Juniper prescriber and our Care Team clinicians are on-hand to support you through the process. Whether it’s advice on using a different kind of pen, concerns about side effects, or needing to make further adjustments to your dose.
How long does it take to switch?
At Juniper we’ve made the switching experience as quick and painless as possible. If you’re doing well on your current treatment, we’ll usually be able to switch you straight away if that’s your wish.
If you’ve recently experienced side effects or have questions or concerns about switching we will arrange a review consultation with your prescriber so that you can make sure you’re comfortable and your prescriber can individually assess the right dose to switch to. This might take a day or two to complete.
Can I go back to Mounjaro if Wegovy isn’t right for me?
Yes, we’ll always provide you with treatment options where one medication isn’t working out well for you. Your Juniper prescriber and Care Team clinicians are on-hand to support you through the switching phase and will arrange a review consultation at any time if you have concerns or feel that you may want to switch back.
What is Wegovy®?
Wegovy® is a once-weekly injectable weight loss medication containing semaglutide. It’s licensed in the UK to support weight loss in adults living with obesity, or who are overweight with weight-related health conditions such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. Wegovy® mimics a naturally occurring hormone (GLP-1) that helps regulate appetite, making it easier to eat less and lose weight.
How do I use Wegovy® pens?
Wegovy® is injected once a week into the arm, thigh, or abdomen using a pre-filled pen with a fine needle. The injection is just under the skin and is designed to be quick and relatively painless. Each pen delivers a single, fixed dose. After injecting, dispose of the pen in a sharps bin as directed and follow storage instructions carefully.
How long can I use Wegovy®?
You’ll have regular reviews with the clinical team to ensure Wegovy® is effective for you. After reaching your maintenance dose and using it consistently for 6 months, you should have lost around 5% of your starting body weight to continue. With medical supervision, Wegovy® may be used for up to 2 years or longer, depending on your health goals and response to treatment.
Can I get Wegovy® on the NHS?
Wegovy® is available on the NHS under strict eligibility criteria. It may be prescribed through a specialist weight management service for people with a BMI over 35, or over 30 with certain health conditions. NHS access is currently limited, and most people will have greater access through a private provider.

Can I get Wegovy® from my pharmacy?
Yes, Wegovy® is a prescription-only medicine. If you have a valid prescription from a doctor or weight management service, some community pharmacies and online pharmacies can dispense it. Availability may vary depending on stock levels and supply.
