Is Wegovy® a licensed weight loss medication in the UK?

Yes, Wegovy® is licensed for weight loss in the UK and it contains the exact same active ingredient as Ozempic® - semaglutide.

Semaglutide was first approved in the UK in 2017 under the brand name Ozempic®, for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, and has been widely used by people with diabetes since then.

Wegovy®, the weight loss version of semaglutide, was approved by the MHRA in September 2023. While its use for weight management is relatively new, the drug itself has a long safety track record—clinical trials for semaglutide began in 2008.

So you can feel confident knowing Wegovy® is both well-researched and medically approved.

Is Wegovy® as effective as Mounjaro®?

Clinical trials show that Mounjaro (tirzepatide) tends to result in slightly greater weight loss than the currently approved dose of Wegovy (semaglutide).

However, this doesn’t take into account cost or long-term accessibility. GLP‑1 medications work best when used consistently over time, so the most effective option is the one you can afford and stick with for as long as you need.

A higher 7.2 mg dose of Wegovy is expected later this year. In clinical trials, it delivered comparable weight loss to Mounjaro - over 20% on average - meaning the difference in drug effectiveness will soon be negligible.

How does Wegovy® work?

Mounjaro® should be stored in a refrigerator and kept at 2–8°C, or in a cooler/ice pack when travelling. Don’t freeze it, or use it if it has been frozen. Keep the cap on when the pen isn’t in use to protect it from light.
Mounjaro® is a once-weekly injection that’s given in the arm, leg or abdomen. It uses a very small, fine needle for a near-painless injection just below the surface of the skin. The Mounjaro® pen comes with clear instructions for use. It has a simple dial in order to deliver the right amount of medication for your treatment stage. Once you’ve had the injection, remove and dispose of the needle in a sharps bin. Replace the cap and store as instructed.

Can I transfer my current medication approval from another provider? Can I maintain my dose?

Yes, you can. If you're currently using weight loss medication through another provider, our 3-step process makes it easy to transfer to Juniper. You may be able to maintain your current dose or continue on a maintenance dose, even if your BMI is as low as 22.It’s safe to switch treatments during your treatment, provided this is appropriately supervised by an expert clinician like we have at Juniper.  Switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy is considered very safe, and generally, anyone who can be treated with Mounjaro can be safely treated with Wegovy.  Wegovy has the added advantage of not affecting the contraceptive pill or certain other medicines, which can make it a safer treatment option for some.

Your Juniper clinician and Care Team are here to support you, whether you're switching medications, managing side effects, adjusting your dose, or deciding to stop medication. We'll work with you to find the safest, most sustainable path forward.

Can I get Wegovy® on the NHS?

Wegovy® is available on the NHS under strict eligibility criteria. It may be prescribed through a specialist weight management service for people with a BMI over 35, or over 30 with certain health conditions. NHS access is currently limited, and most people will have greater access through a private provider.

Can I get Wegovy® from my pharmacy?

Yes, Wegovy® is a prescription-only medicine. If you have a valid prescription from a doctor or weight management service, some community pharmacies and online pharmacies can dispense it. Availability may vary depending on stock levels and supply.

Can you buy weight loss medication in the UK?

Yes, weight loss medication is available in the UK. It was first approved in 2017 for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, and has been safely used by people with diabetes ever since.

The active ingredient was later approved by the MHRA for weight loss in September 2023. While its use for weight management is relatively new, the medication itself has a strong safety profile, supported by clinical trials dating back to 2008.

Which medications do you offer? What are the requirements?

We offer a range of clinically-proven weight loss medications, including all doses of the most popular options on the market. The specific medication that’s right for you will depend on your individual health profile and goals, and will be shared once you complete our short eligibility quiz.

In general, medications are available to those with a BMI over 27 with a related health condition, or a BMI over 30. If you’ve previously been prescribed a weight loss medication by another provider, you may be eligible to continue with Juniper on a maintenance dose, down to a BMI of 22.

How do weight loss medications work?

Weight loss medication works by targeting the areas of the brain that regulate appetite, helping you feel fuller for longer and reducing cravings. It also slows down how quickly food leaves the stomach, which supports better blood sugar control and steadier energy levels. Together, these effects make it easier to eat less and lose weight in a sustainable way.

Clinical trials show on average you will lose up to 21% body weight in a year with the medication.
