Weight Loss Injection FAQs

Which injections are available in the UK?

In the UK, the main prescription injections used for weight loss are Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) and Wegovy® (semaglutide). Both are once-weekly injections that help regulate appetite and improve metabolic health.

You might have heard of Ozempic®—while it contains the same active ingredient as Wegovy® (semaglutide), Ozempic® is licensed for type 2 diabetes, not weight loss. That’s why we don’t offer Ozempic® for weight management. Wegovy® and Mounjaro® are the licensed and clinically appropriate options for people seeking support with weight loss.

How do I use weight loss injections?

Both Wegovy® and Mounjaro® are injected once a week just under the skin (subcutaneous injection) in the arm, thigh, or abdomen. The pens are designed to be simple and nearly painless, using very fine needles.

Wegovy® delivers a fixed dose per pen.
Mounjaro® comes with a dial to adjust the dose as you progress through your treatment plan.

After each injection, the pen or needle should be disposed of in a sharps bin. Always follow the instructions provided with your prescription.

What are the potential side effects of weight loss injections?

Both Mounjaro® and Wegovy® work by slowing digestion and reducing appetite, which can lead to similar side effects. Common side effects include:

Nausea
Diarrhoea or constipation
Indigestion
Vomiting
Fatigue
Reduced appetite

These usually improve over time as your body adjusts. Rare but serious side effects may include pancreatitis, gallbladder issues, or allergic reactions. If symptoms are severe or persistent, contact your healthcare provider.

What is the dosage and how should the injections be stored?

Both medications are taken once a week, and the dose is gradually increased over time.

Wegovy® starts at 0.25 mg and builds up to a maintenance dose of 2.4 mg.
Mounjaro® typically starts at 2.5 mg, increasing over several weeks depending on your response.

Storage: Keep pens in the fridge (2°C to 8°C). Once opened or in use, pens can be stored at room temperature (up to 30°C) for:

Wegovy®: up to 28 days
Mounjaro®: up to 21 days

How long can I use weight loss injections?

You can usually stay on Wegovy® or Mounjaro® for up to two years, depending on your progress and clinical guidance.

We review your results regularly to ensure the medication is working for you. You’ll need to have lost around 5% of your initial body weight after 6 months at your highest tolerated dose to continue treatment.

Can I get weight loss injections on the NHS?

Yes, but access is currently limited and prioritised.

Wegovy® is available on the NHS through specialist weight management services, which have up to 2 year waitlists. To be eligible, you’ll typically need:

A BMI of 35 or higher, or
A BMI of 30 or higher with weight-related health conditions (like type 2 diabetes or sleep apnoea)
Commitment to a structured programme with lifestyle and clinical support

As of 23 June 2025, Mounjaro® is officially being rolled out on the NHS for weight management. However, the rollout is happening in phases, starting with those at highest clinical risk—typically:

A BMI of 40 or higher, and
At least four weight-related health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease

This rollout includes mandatory wrap-around support, such as diet, exercise, and behavioural support services.

Important to note:

Not all NHS areas (ICBs) have services live yet, availability depends on your location
Around 220,000 high-need patients are expected to access Mounjaro® on the NHS over the first three years
If you're not eligible through the NHS, both Wegovy® and Mounjaro® are available privately

Can I get weight loss injections from my pharmacy?

Yes. If you have a valid private prescription, both Wegovy® and Mounjaro® can be dispensed by selected community or online pharmacies.

Availability may vary depending on demand and supply. Some pharmacies offer limited support, while others (like us) include clinical oversight and lifestyle coaching as part of your treatment plan.
