What are Wegovy pills?

The Wegovy pill is a once daily oral medication made by pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk. It contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient in the Wegovy injection.

The Wegovy pill is the first oral GLP-1 specifically approved by the US medicines regulator, the FDA, for weight loss and obesity management [3]. It was approved for use in the UK by the UK medicines regulator, known as the MHRA, for use as an obesity treatment on 11 June 2026. Now that it is approved, Wegovy pills are available for pre-order and will start shipping to eligible patients in early July once stock is made available by the manufacturer.

How do Wegovy pills work?

The Wegovy pill contains semaglutide, which is known as a GLP-1 receptor agonist. This means it works by mimicking the natural GLP-1 hormone found in your gut. The hormone’s job is to help:
  • Slow down your digestion
  • Regulate your appetite⁓
  • Regulate your blood sugar⁵.
The tablet works the same as the Wegovy injection. However, instead of semaglutide entering the bloodstream directly via a needle, the pill goes via your stomach — in a protective coating that can’t be dissolved by stomach acid — and into the bloodstream through the walls of the small intestine.

Frequently asked questions

Are Wegovy pills available in the UK?

The Wegovy pill was approved by the MHRA on 11 June 2026. You can pre-order the Wegovy Pill now but no provider in the UK will be able to ship medication until they receive stock from the manufacturer in early July.

Is the Wegovy pill as effective as the injection?

Clinical trials have shown comparable weight loss results between the Wegovy pill and injection. For the tablet, it was 16.6% of average body weight lost in 64 weeks¹ vs 20.7% in 72 weeks⁶ for the injection.

How do you take the Wegovy tablet?Ā

The Wegovy tablet is taken once daily. It has to be taken first thing in the morning and on an empty stomach, with a subsequent wait of at least 30 minutes before consuming food or other medications⁷.

ā€

Dr. Simon Doyle, Juniper GP, stresses the importance of this. ā€œBecause of the way oral Wegovy is structured, it needs to be taken on an empty stomach to enable absorption. If you don't stick to the 30-minute fasting window, some of the drug won’t be absorbed well, so you won’t get a full dose, and therefore you’re not likely to get the full benefits.ā€

How is the Wegovy tablet different from Rybelsus?Ā

Like the Wegovy tablet, Rybelsus is an oral medication that contains the active ingredient semaglutide. However, it’s not approved to be used for weight loss — only for type 2 diabetes — and the dosages are very different⁸.
